"I could just remember how my father used to say that the reason for living was to get ready to stay dead a long time."

A true 20th-century classic, As I Lay Dying is a Southern Gothic tale of one family's quest to fulfil their mother's dying wish to be buried in her rural Mississippi hometown. Taking to the road by wagon, the Bundren family encounters setbacks and difficulties along the way, among them a broken leg, suspicious fires, washed-out bridges, and a rotting corpse.

Drawing inspiration for the title from Homer's Odyssey, Faulkner presents fifteen different narrators—each filling in a part of the story—in his trademark stream-of-consciousness style. Considered one of the great American novels, Addie Bundren's journey to her final resting place is in turns both darkly comedic and deeply tragic.
